so, how can I help?
April 30, 2008
And what a great question that is.
If you’ve found your way here from Brenda’s blog, here’s some great news - below are a few different ways you can help out a local animal organization, especially if you have no clue where to start.
1. Brenda’s suggestion and what I have been doing for almost the past two years - volunteer a few hours during the week or even on the weekend and snap some photos for an organization. I promise they will be thrilled and overjoyed at the results.
2. Don’t have a few hours to spare? Think about sponsoring a dog or cat that has recently come into a rescue and might need expensive medication or surgery. Although you will find that many vet office’s will discount services for a rescue, they can still be rather costly, especially if an organization takes in two or three needy animals at once.
3. Consider donating old blankets, towels, newspapers to a rescue of your choice when you are all finished with your spring cleaning.
4. Rather shop for new items? Most rescues are always in need of leashes (leather), collars (thick, thin, and in-between), and even different varieties of dog/cat food (including speciality brands for animals with allergies).
5. Be a part of an organizations’ next big fundraiser - offer to secure donations from large companies, post flyers, and sell 50/50 tickets at the event.
Still not sure how to find a rescue you want to work with? The best suggestion is to go to petfinder.com and search by zip code for an animal welfare organization. Take a few minutes looking at their website and current needs. Perhaps you can even find a better way to help them out!!

Great post! It’s really informative and spot on. I posted on craigslist looking for a rescue to shoot photos for — and it’s been a great relationship ever since.

Teresa, thank you so much for this wonderful information. I went to petfinder.com and did a search and was astonished at just how many dogs (and I’m sure other animals) need a loving home! Our dog has food allergies and she eats prescription dog food. I’m sure there are other dogs with similar issues and since we’re not in position to adopt, I think I know just the way our family can help
