this just in….part II

September 27, 2008

I’ll keep it short and sweet….FIVE beds.  That means in just a short while five dogs won’t have to sleep on a concrete floor anymore.  That thought makes me so happy.

Let’s be honest though, I think we can do five more.  If you are reading this and haven’t made a charitable donation yet this year, I promise you that you won’t regret this donation.  And the good news is I can tell you exactly where it’s going.  And I might even be able to snag a picture or two from our Gladwin shelter coordinator for you to see your good work in action.

You’ll definately be on Santa’s good list this year….

this just in….

September 23, 2008

For two days only (ends at midnight on Sept 24th), donate a Kuranda bed to Gladwin Animal County Shelter and I’ll waive the session fee (a $50 value).

I support Gladwin Animal Shelter rescue pets and I want them to have a bit of comfort during their stay in the shelter.  The shelter doesn’t have enough beds for everyone.  If you would like to donate a bed at a special wholesale price for another dog or cat to sleep in comfort, please click here!

I’ll ask to see a receipt of your donation when booking and sorting out the details of our session!!

_____

Gladwin County Shelter is dear to my heart since many of our rescues come from this particular site and without our help, majority of them would not get a second chance at life.  They are very full right now and are always in constant need good quality pet food, kitty litter, pet toys, and printer ink/paper.  If you can offer assistance but are unsure of who to contact, please email me and I can point you into the right direction.

back to the basics

August 26, 2008

A dog intensive post….well, just because we haven’t had one in a while now!

I’m in need of a few folks who are dog owners, so if that’s you listen up :)   If you (or a close friend) have a dog and wouldn’t mind spending an hour or so in the park with me and my camera, please email me.  There is not a specific breed or age I am looking for, but rather a low-key, friendly canine who likes to have their picture taken (ummm, okay - let’s be honest, there are few of those).  I mean a low-key, friendly canine who can be persuaded to look in the direction of the camera with delicious treats!  In return for a release, I can offer you five high-resolution images on a CD to do whatever your heart desires.

Also, keep in mind that Christmas is truely not that far away.  If you dread the christmas card shopping and autographing, let me make it easy for you.  Schedule a session for you and your spouse, family, or just the kids and let me do the christmas card designing.  I have a selection of christmas cards that can be custom printed with your holiday message and delivered to your home with envelopes ready to address and stamp.  Thinking you don’t want to get in front of the camera…..people love pets on cards, so think about featuring your canine (and feline) friends this season!

And what’s a post with some pictures??!!  Without further adeu….Kadie and Paco.

Also, you might have heard about Chai, the golden, who had his tongue amputated after a freak accident with a play ball.  I urge you to read Chai’s story and spread the message about these type of toys as I fear other dogs have experiences with similar products.  (NOTE:  I’m not about boycotting this one company in particular or any others for that matter, however I am about saving a dog pain, so if you own a ball with a related description I suggest you think about throwing it away)

red, white, and blue dog

June 16, 2008

It’s almost that time of year….no, no!!  Not that time, although I must admit Christmas in July sales are something that I do enjoy.  :)

Time to bring out the red, white, and blue in all of us.  For the first time, WT will be marching with a float in the Northville 4th of July parade.  The committee asked if I wouldn’t mind rounding up between 50 and 60 headshots of the dogs we have rescued over the past 18th months.  One side of the float will have an 8 x 8 foot montage of my photographs!!  Below is just a rough sample of some of my favorites.

the senior project

June 8, 2008

I think I enjoy photographing the senior dogs as much as the younger puppies.  Why, you ask?  They have the best manners in the world!

It’s true that I’ve come across my fair share of older dogs and I can’t help but love each and every one.  And let’s be honest, age is just a number.  It takes a special kind of home to adopt a senior dog, but honestly everyone should consider it.  Many of these dogs are left behind not because of a dog problem, but because of the circumstances they currently reside in - a death in the family, a divorce, a new baby, children moving away to college, a new spouse doesn’t like the dog, and I could go on.  Below are just a few reasons to keep in mind if you are considering adopting an older dog (and they are all POSITIVE).

1.  Many times they have had some sort of obedience training and house manners.

2.  Older dogs quickly learn what is expected of them and know how to be patient.

3.  You’ll never have to guess how big they’ll grow!

4.  They understand ‘pack’ rules (especially if you have other animals )and how to be a companion.

There are many rescues throughout the country that specialize in senior dog adoptions, so make sure to check your local area if interested.  And just for fun, below is Buba - an eight year old beagle full of life and energy.  His current interest includes pulling the hose out of the small pool his foster mom fills daily for him to swim in.  :)

life’s a picnic

May 28, 2008

Okay, well it was for many of the WT volunteers two weeks ago Sunday.  Why you ask - it was our 1st annual picnic/reunion and what a success it was!  In over just a short year, we have rescued and adopted over 175 dogs/puppies to wonderful, loving, and generous homes.  It was amazing to see the turnout and continued support we have received from the community and our own volunteers.  The day was filled with food (human and doggie, alike), activities, and games for those of all ages!  Even after the weather predicted a 40-50% chance of rain, there was only a 10 minute period where everyone had to crowd around the pavillion.  I would like to think the few dogs whom are no longer with us were our guardian angels and kept the rain away!!

I’m into the square portraits lately…..a little something different.  Let me know what you think!!  :)

what a heart

May 15, 2008

Okay, yes….it’s quite possible that 100% of the dogs I have met in the past 21 months have the biggest and most forgiving hearts ever known.

Take a look at this cutie though.  That’s right, look carefully.  Do you see it??  Dessa’s very own nose is shaped like a heart - talk about big bonus points to whomever adopts her!  I could have just snapped her most adorable features all day.  I digress - because only I would find joy in such images.  But honestly, it’s all the little parts that make a dog whole.  Who says I can’t spend a few extra minutes enjoying them??!!

so, how can I help?

April 30, 2008

And what a great question that is.  :)

If you’ve found your way here from Brenda’s blog, here’s some great news - below are a few different ways you can help out a local animal organization, especially if you have no clue where to start.

1.  Brenda’s suggestion and what I have been doing for almost the past two years - volunteer a few hours during the week or even on the weekend and snap some photos for an organization.  I promise they will be thrilled and overjoyed at the results.

2.  Don’t have a few hours to spare?  Think about sponsoring a dog or cat that has recently come into a rescue and might need expensive medication or surgery.  Although you will find that many vet office’s will discount services for a rescue, they can still be rather costly, especially if an organization takes in two or three needy animals at once.

3.  Consider donating old blankets, towels, newspapers to a rescue of your choice when you are all finished with your spring cleaning.

4.  Rather shop for new items?  Most rescues are always in need of leashes (leather), collars (thick, thin, and in-between), and even different varieties of dog/cat food (including speciality brands for animals with allergies).

5.  Be a part of an organizations’ next big fundraiser - offer to secure donations from large companies, post flyers, and sell 50/50 tickets at the event.

Still not sure how to find a rescue you want to work with?  The best suggestion is to go to petfinder.com and search by zip code for an animal welfare organization.  Take a few minutes looking at their website and current needs.  Perhaps you can even find a better way to help them out!!
